    We delighted to share with you the availability of our workshop: Origami for Kids, with our paper artist, Michelle Lackenby

    Michelle is extremely personable and has over 25 years of experience in the creative industry with extensive skills and knowledge of paper arts and crafts.

    She teaches in workshops, Universities, corporate events, and runs many workshops for kids during school holidays. She's generous with her knowledge and has a great passion for all things paper.

    This class is kept to around 7 kids so our teacher can give them plenty of attention.

    11th July - Themed around animals

    To warm up, we will welcome the children with yummy homemade, all-natural, morning tea and let them introduce themselves a little before we start the class.

    Parents are expected to drop their children off. Please inform us of any allergies or special instructions.

    We encourage parents to have a nice morning, exploring Fitzroy, or exploring any of the legions of amazing cafes. One of our favorites is "Alimentary" at 251 Brunswick Street, which is located few minutes walk from us.

    An exhilarating concert of Japanese drumming featuring taiko ensembles from across Australia and Japan. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy this one-off event showcasing the energy and love of drumming that the participating groups bring to the Australian taiko stage.

    Special Guest: Hiro Hayashida (Japan)

    Hiro Hayashida is an internationally-renowned Katsugi Okedaiko performer who was a member of Kodo for seven years from 1985, and has been recognized highly all over the world for his new style and his musicality.

    Hayashida Sensei is an excellent performer, composer and producer and has an ability to create very difficult compositions even in the Taiko world. We are honoured that he accepted our invitation this year!

    Fourteen taiko teams will gather in Melbourne in July to participate in 2018's All Australian Wadaiko Festival. This biennial celebration brings together taiko groups for workshops, masterclasses and the opportunity to participate in a performance that showcases what each group brings to Australia's taiko scene. This concert also includes a collaborative piece learnt and practiced during the Festival.

    Hiro Hayashida and the ZI-PANG Japanese drummers have created unique musical artworks with a select number of exceptional Melbourne based musicians.

    We will have wonderful Iranian-Australian Persian Kamancheh and Qeychak player Gelareh Pour as support performer too.

    KAMI is excited to work with Michelle Lackenby from Paperazzi Design studio again after a great success in our first collaboration 

    In this 2.5 hour workshop with Michelle Lackenby, you’ll learn a variety of traditional binding stitch techniques and patterns and create your very own books to take home.

    The techniques covered include simple Japanese stitch, Japanese stab binding, Hemp stitch and tortoise shell binding. Each technique builds on the last and all notes and materials will be supplied so you can create your own set of softcover books to take home. 

    Come along and have a fun afternoon creating your very own handmade books combining Japanese binding and paper marbling techniques!. No experience necessary and all materials will be provided.

    with Junko Azukawa

    Since becoming a resident of Melbourne, Australia in 2005, Junko has brought her unique artistic talents and outlook to the Australian art scene. She started teaching Japanese calligraphy and painting with children and adults at numerous schools and organisations and also exhibited at a number of galleries in Australia and Japan, most recently at the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia in 2016 - 2017. In 2011 Junko started to use her art form with mental illness patients as a form of therapy with great compassion. She is also sought after in commercial design work for her skillful brushwork from bottle label design to restaurant interior design. She has had her illustrations published in the novel: NAVIGATIO authored by Australian writer Patrick Holland in 2014.
