    Applications are now open for the Australia Japan Foundation's Grant Program for projects commencing between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015. Grant applications can be submitted until Friday 4 April 1900 (AEST) or 1700 (Japan). The grants are intended to provide seed funding for innovative proposals relevant to the objectives of the Australia-Japan Foundation.

    ABC reporter Mark Willacy was interviewed on ABC Radio National's breakfast program about his new book "Fukushima: Japane's Tsunami & The Inside Story of the Nuclear Meltdowns".

    The book will be available from 1 July 2013 for $32.99 at all good ABC Shops, and Mark will speak at the Australian embassy in Tokyo on 25 July 2013.

    The School of Social and Political Sciences presents the first in its 2013 Seminar Series
    "Governing Financial Crisis in East Asia"

    East Asia’s burgeoning importance within the global political economy requires greater understanding of the peculiarities of capitalist systems and their governance within the region. This discussion brings together some of the world’s leading experts on capitalism in East Asia, from the fields of Anthropology and Political Science to consider this, with a predominant focus on the prescient issue of governing financial crises in the region.

    In cooperation with the Malvern Artists' Society Gallery, the Sogetsu School of Ikebana is holding an exhibition of flower arrangements prepared by award-winning senior teachers and students of this subtle and beautiful Japanese art form.

    The Sogetsu School has also prepared a demonstration of Sogetsu Ikebana on Thursday 16 May at 1:30pm, which will be followed by tea/coffee and an opportunity for guests to join a discussion on ikebana.

    We encourage anybody with an interest in ikebana or Japanese culture to come along and enjoy the display.

The first 3D film to ever be shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, the story centres on a poverty-stricken Samurai who discovers the fate of his son-in-law, setting in motion a tense showdown of vengeance.

    To commemorate 2 years since the Fukushima nuclear disaster, people directly affected will visit Australia to share their stories of radiation and resilience and see where uranium is mined and exported to Japan.

    ABC Radio are running a series of interviews with inspirational Asian women, including Matsumoto Tomiko, a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. 

    The interviews will be published on their website one per month from February 2013 to December 2013.  Matsumoto Tomiko's interview will become available in August.

    The Asian Law Centre would like to invite you to two Asian Legal Dialogues, which will be presented in Japanese.


    Ms Michiko Kametaka is a Court Clerk at the Yokohama District Court,  Japan .  She will speak on “The Role of Court Clerks in  Japan ” on Tuesday 19 February.

    Judge Sachiyo Kitagawa is a Judge of the Fukuoka District Court,  Japan .  She will speak on “The Life of a Judge in  Japan ” on Thursday 21 February.

    These seminars coincide with the Chuo Summer School, which will be hosted by the Asian Law Centre from 18 February to 1 March, 2013, so it will also be a good opportunity to meet students from  Japan .

    JCCI Japanese Summer Festival

    February will see the return of the hugely popular Japanese Summer Festival,
    or Natsu Matsuri, at Docklands in Melbourne. This festival regularly
    attracts crowds of over 10,000 people and isn't to be missed! Organisers of
    the event expect that this year's festival will be just as popular as
    Melburnians join in celebrating Japanese culture and traditions.

    The AJSV will be manning a stall and selling 'dagashi' (traditional Japanese
    sweets) so why not come down on the day to join in the festivities!
