Don’t know your chevre from your cheddar? Or your saison from your stout? The AJSV Beer and Cheese tasting event on Thursday 9th February provided members and their friends with an opportunity to become educated in such matters. Held at the Local Tap House, East St Kilda, beer enthusiast and novice alike gathered in the private rooftop garden to prepare for the journey that began in barley field and dairy pasture.
Armed with our tasting flights our host, James, guided us on our journey of discovery, talking through each of the matched beer and cheese pairings with a level of knowledge and enthusiasm that only comes from one who is passionate about their craft.
The beer was sourced from local Victorian craft breweries, and the spectrum ranged from fruity saison and yeast driven wheat beer, all the way to malty brown ale and chocolatey dark roasted stout. The cheese followed a similar line from locally sourced creamy goats cheese, French Delice de Bourgogne, through to robust cheddar, finishing with a rich, pungent blue.
Thus ended our journey, but the night was not over, for the warm Melbourne summer evening encouraged people to grab another drink from the bar and reflect on their new found appreciation for that which is much more than just “beer and cheese”.
