    29th Asian Pacific Children's Convention Fukuoka Japan, July 2017

    Applications are now open for the 2017 APCC, which will be held for approximately 12-15 days from the middle of July 2017. To be eligible, children must have been born between 1st September 2005 and 31st August 2006.

    This is a unique event, which allows approximately 230 eleven-year-old children from 43 regions around the Asian Pacific rim as well as sister cities in USA, France and Peru to share in a truly international exchange and we highly recommend this opportunity being offered to Victorian students. This opportunity is being facilitated by the Australia Japan Society of Victoria.

    THE 28th ASIAN PACIFIC CHILDRENS CONVENTION, FUKUOKA JAPAN

    JULY 2016

    Each year, 6 children are selected by the Australia Japan Society of Victoria (AJSV) to attend the Asian Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) in Fukuoka, Japan.  A chaperone is required to assist the AJSV Liaison officer with the briefing and preparations for the visit as well as attending the convention. The chaperone will be responsible for the care of the children, both while travelling and in Japan (approx. two weeks), assisted by a Peace Ambassador.  Whilst in Japan, the chaperone will fully participate in the APCC program including homestay with a Japanese family, school visit, camp and other events/activities organised by the APCC/host families. There is no opportunity for independent travel or sightseeing during the convention. Meals, accommodation and transport whilst in Japan are provided.

    Final dates of this year’s convention will not be known until late May however, it will be from approximately 10 July to 24 July (approx.) and does not fully coincide with Australian school holidays. It should be noted that this is a voluntary position and it is anticipated that the selected person will have experience with children, particularly those in upper primary school.

    Airfares and travel insurance will be covered by AJSV but AJSV membership, spending money, passports etc are the responsibility of the selected person. A Working with Children’s check will be required prior to the trip. Japanese language will be an advantage but is not essential but interest in Japan is essential!

    Expressions of interest in this position should be forwarded, together with a brief resume  to the Australia Japan Society of Victoria office no later than 4.00pm on Monday, March 7th, 2016. Applications should include relevant experience with upper Primary School aged children, details of past travel including Japan as well as any other relevant qualifications. You should also provide your reasons for wishing to be part of the program. Short listed applicants will be invited to an interview with members of AJSV Committee of Management. Interviews will be arranged following this date. Male and female applicants are encouraged as the six children consist of three boys and three girls.

    Our Australians are having a fantastic time in Fukuoka at the 27th APCC! They are doing a fantastic job representing us and enjoying engaging with all the participants. Chanel (this years Peace Ambassador) has been busy at PA camp; dancing, taking photos and making lifelong friends as well as learning the ropes about Bridge Club and will teach us all new ways to get involved and motivated when she returns.

    The next phase is the favourite home stay where everyone will enjoy Japanese cultural exchange :)

    You are invited to attend Bridge Club Australia's trivia night for Nepal. 

    As participants of the APCC we are global citizens. Whilst in Japan, we all made friendships with people from across the world and It is our responsibility to help one another in times of need. 

    In light of the recent natural disaster in Nepal, Bridge Club Australia is running a trivia night to raise funds for victims affected by the 7.9 magnitude earthquake. Many of our dear friends in Nepal are among the 5.6 million people still lacking basic necessities such as water, shelter and medical care. 

    Please come to the fund raising trivia night. 


    When: 5th July 6pm

    Where: Cooinda Guide Hall, Rostrevor Parade, Mount Albert North

    Bring along your friends and family, food and drinks (tea and coffee will be provided) and plenty of gold coins.

    We ask that you donate a gold coin on entry and bring a wrapped gift to the value of $10, to be added to our mystery prize table. 

    There will be a silent auction, plenty of prizes and lots of fun to be had by all. 

     

    We are calling on you, to help our dear friends in Nepal, and why not do so while having fun with old and new friends.

    This fund was set up by a fellow APCC participant from Nepal, Brinda Shrestha, who is now living in Australia. These funds will go directly to the ground work and support of her community which were severely effected by the earthquake.

    Landing in Fukouka Japan after 24 hours of traveling, we were greeted by the APCC volunteers and had our photos taken by what seemed like a million people, we felt like celebrities. We were then taken to Marine House where we were welcomed and helped the JA’s settle in. After lunch I said goodbye to the JA’s and chaperone's and was taken to the PA camp at Global Arena.

     

    Arriving at Global Arena was great; I was greeted by some of the other PA’s and we were shown to our rooms. After dinner we started to bond strong friendships while practicing the PA performance for the event day .

    PA camp at Global arena was an amazing experience; I met many wonderful people and learnt a lot about the BC organisation and also how to run a successful bridge club. There were many seminars and meetings that helped to improve my understanding of BCIO as well as free time and games that helped us to build friendships that I know will last a lifetime.

     

    The host family stay was another highlight of the trip; I was lucky enough to be hosted by the same family as I had in 2006 as a JA. It was marvelous to see them again and see how they had changed and grown. My host family was really wonderful and I had an amazing time with them in the city. We went to temples, parks, turtle hunting, played with fireworks, visited family and went into the country to ride an old train and see the green cherry blossoms. I was able to help cook a variety of Japanese food that was fun to make and really delicious to eat!

     

    The PA’s stalls, on event day, were a big hit, with everyone selling many wonderful and exotic items from their home countries and raising a lot of money for the APCC 25th Reunion next year. Singing ‘We are the Bridge’ at the end of the festival made everyone feel a little sad but also happy to have had such a wonderful experience with such incredible friends.

     

    The whole experience taught me more about the way people from all different cultures and countries are all more similar then different. I learnt a great deal about Japan and Japanese culture, and about the APCC and BC programs. I was very sad to leave my host family and the friends I had made in Japan, but I made sure I said “see you next time”, not goodbye.

    It was once again a great pleasure to be selected as a Mission Project country by the APCC. This year we had 14 children and 3 chaperones visit us in Melbourne for a cross cultural exchange program.

    All the children were hosted by AJS members and friends and some past JAs were also hosts.

    A great time was had by all and we hope we will be selected again in the near future.

    Thankyou to all of the host families for opening up your homes to our Japanese guests and to the 3 Japanese Chaperones for escorting the children to and from Melbourne. We would also like to thank Murray Sayers the AJS President for taking the time to come out to the farewell party and meet our guests.

    It was great to catch up with the 2011 JAs today. We shared a late lunch and played in the back yard then looked at some of the JAs photos/videos on the huge TV. All of the JAs are writing to their families and have completed their diaries and photo albums. It was great to share the memories of a fantastic experience with each other.

    Today the 2011 Australian PA Emily Ballantine Brodie and BCA President Erin Maitland went to the Japanese Consulate, in Melbourne, Australia, to sign the book of Condolence. This book is being written in to express the feelings and pass on the messages of support to all the people affected by the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

    It was great to see so many past JA's and even a few future JA's at a BBQ lunch at past 2010 JA, Tanishas house on Sunday the 18th of March.
    The weather was fantastic and all the kids enjoyed a swim in the pool and playing in the families huge backyard.
    Thankyou to all the Mums and Dads who brought lunch - what a yummy feast we all shared.
    A fun day was had by all and talk has started to plan the next reunion already!
